Pregnancy weight gain

Recommended total and weekly gain for your starting BMI.

How this is worked out, and its limits

Recommendations from the IOM / National Academies 2009, adopted by ACOG, by pre-pregnancy BMI: underweight 12.5 to 18 kg (0.44 to 0.58 kg a week), normal 11.5 to 16 kg (0.35 to 0.50), overweight 7 to 11.5 kg (0.23 to 0.33), obese 5 to 9 kg (0.17 to 0.27). The first trimester is taken as 0.5 to 2 kg in total. Twins: normal 17 to 25, overweight 14 to 23, obese 11 to 19 kg.

These use the WHO BMI categories, not the Asian cut-offs, because the recommendations were built on them. Indian-specific guidance is still developing; your obstetrician's advice comes first.
